Training for nursing staff on Cree lands
On October 1 and 8, 2024, the Support Service gave training workshops during the Nurses’ Annual Training of the Cree Board of Health and Social Service of James Bay. We developed a training titled Interventions with Victims of Sexual Assault that set out to review the basics of medico-social intervention while drawing connections with trauma-informed care and answering questions.
We were pleased to have worked with more than 50 nurses who were looking to deepen their understanding of medico-social intervention and to learn more about best practices in order to broaden their expertise and minimize re-traumatization or their patients.
Support Service coordinators Audrey Larivière and Gabrielle Arthurs learned a lot from the participants about practising in small communities and the particular challenges that arise when communities are very close-knit.
Many thanks to the organizers and personnel who supported our training and who, since the event, have wanted to build closer ties with between the Cree Board of Health and Social Service of James Bay and the Support Service, to improve upon services for victims of sexual assault, and upon training and support for workers assigned to providing medico-social intervention.
We hope to return next year with even more content and innovative techniques for nurses!
