On October 16 and 17, Audrey Larivière, our coordinator of medico-social intervention for minors, attended the 11th edition of the Quebec convention on child and adolescent abuse. This biennial event is organized by CHU Sainte-Justine in partnership with the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux, CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l'Île-de-Montréal, Centre d'expertise Marie-Vincent, Institut national d’excellence en santé et en services sociaux and other partners.

This year’s theme was a response to the changing environment created by the ubiquity of communications technologies, staff shortages, amendments to the Youth Protection Act, and the recommendations of the Laurent Commission, among other factors. The presentations sought to explain and promote the most promising interventions, and to understand how best to intervene in a complementary manner, while remaining focused on the needs of young people. Nearly 40 workshops were offered, covering the following themes:

• Presentations of regional programs or projects that promote concerted action as a key tool for preventing or countering child and adolescent abuse.

• Presentation of specific service trajectories in sexual exploitation, neglect and adapted services for Quebec’s First Nations communities.

• Presentations of innovative service models, in particular SIAM and CAEJ.

• · Workshops on the various legislative changes and the application of the Laurent Commission’s recommendations and their implementation in the various Quebec agencies.

• Presentation of research findings from several research centres, including INESS, the Centre de recherche universitaire sur les jeunes et les familles (CRUJeF), the Marie-Vincent Interuniversity Chair on Child Sexual Abuse and several Quebec universities.

Specifically in the area of sexual abuse, a number of presentations focused on the impact of amendments to the Youth Protection Act, models of clinical follow-up after the initial medico-social intervention and studies on professionals who work with young victims of sexual abuse.
